Does the mere mention of the words “Mardi Gras” take you back to your childhood? Is your mind flooded with memories of funny costumes and the aroma of freshly-made pancakes? If so, then we suggest recreating this joyful ambiance with a Carnival-style afternoon indulgence accompanied by most irresistible gourmet Kusmi Tea blends.
Mardi Gras, Good-Times on Tuesday
This celebration is rooted in both pagan and Christian traditions, and announces the arrival of the sunnier days and shorter nights of spring. Mardi Gras (literally “Fat Tuesday) falls on the day before Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent – a time of fasting. Given the more stringent days to come, the Tuesday celebrations are a chance to have fun and allow ourselves a few little indulgences!
In France, the festive menu includes fritters, donuts, crêpes, and waffles, because these sweet treats are made using simple ingredients such as eggs, butter, and milk. This culinary arsenal was generally stocked in most homes in the countryside during the winter, and so was readily available with the arrival of Lent.
Who said all teas are the same?
Despite what some may say, there really are teas to suit all tastes. To find yours, the first step is to choose the base of the blend: green or black, with whole tea leaves or maté? Next, let your imagination run wild! The gourmet teas from Kusmi are made using the most irresistibly delicious ingredients – the perfect accompaniment to a cozy break, whether on your own, with your family, or with colleagues at work.
Saint Petersburg is one of the flagship blends by Kusmi – created for the 300-year anniversary of the eponymous city – and is sure to win over all Earl Grey enthusiasts. This black tea flavored with bergamot features a hint of sweetness along with notes of caramel, red fruits and vanilla. And to keep everyone happy, there is even a green tea version! Chocoholics will be drawn to a cup of Chocolate-Mint or Spicy Chocolate – perfect for an afternoon break. Alternatively, if you can’t resist the taste of vanilla, then go for a Bourbon Vanilla. This subtly-flavored black tea from China is the ideal partner for a well-being time-out from work. However, if you are in need of a little boost, then Euphoria is for you! The name alone gives an indication of its effects… This blend combines grilled maté, cacao beans, orange peel and orange blossom for the perfect tea break. And if you are looking for tea, the whole tea, and nothing but the tea, we recommend the Ceylon OP – a Ceylon Orange Pekoe tea revealing full-bodied chocolate fragrances.
So, have you made up your mind?
While you take the time to decide, we will leave you with a recipe for typically French sweet fritters known as “Merveilles.” These South-Western delicacies are truly irresistible, and pair to perfection with all the Kusmi gourmet teas.
Merveille Sweet Fritters Recipe
8.8 oz flour
3 tablespoons of vegetable oil
2.1 oz of caster sugar + a few spoonfuls for sprinkling
1 tablespoon of orange blossom water (optional)
Pour the flour into a mixing bowl. Add the beaten eggs, followed by the oil, sugar, and orange blossom water (if using). Mix with a wooden spoon, then knead the dough by hand to make a smooth, consistent ball (add a little extra flour if necessary). Roll out the dough using a rolling pin, then cut into pretty shapes or strips to be tied in a bow. Heat enough oil to deep fry in a pan, and brown each piece on all sides. Remove from oil with a slotted spoon, and put to one side on some paper towel. Sprinkle with sugar before serving. Bon appétit!
